Our method

This page describes how a BackyardRated guide is built. It is linked from every page on the site because a verdict without a method behind it is just an opinion with a headline.

Where evidence comes from

Every load bearing claim traces to a source we can point at, in this order of preference: the manufacturer's own specification or product page, a retailer listing for price and availability, an independent test publication named in the text, and owner reports where they are numerous enough to mean something.

We are explicit about the weakest case. When a product's independent evidence is thin, for instance a handful of reviews on one platform and a single magazine test, the page says that plainly rather than presenting a confident verdict the evidence cannot support.

Ratings from other publications

When another publication has tested a machine, we may quote its conclusion and name it. What we never do is fold someone else's score into a rating of our own, or publish an aggregate rating we did not produce. Their test is their work, and it is attributed as such.

Every product gets drawbacks

No product on this site ships without a documented list of where it falls short. This is a rule in the code, not an aspiration: a product card with an empty drawbacks list throws an error and the page will not build.

The drawbacks that matter most are the ones you only discover after paying. Restocking fees, return shipping, warranty conditions that require you to have filmed the unboxing, and features the marketing implies but the product does not have all belong on the page, above the fold of your decision rather than buried under it.

Prices and how they are dated

Prices on this site were last verified on July 28, 2026. Every price is checked on the seller's own page on one sweep day each month, and every page renders that one date, so no page can quietly carry a stamp that looks fresher than the check behind it.

Prose uses bands rather than exact figures wherever an exact figure would add nothing. An exact price lives on the product card, next to its date, where you can see how old it is. If a price matters to a comparison, it stays exact and the comparison says why.

Affiliate links do not affect rankings

We earn commission on some purchases, and that never decides an order or a verdict. Two rules keep that honest in practice. We do not link to a retailer that charges more than the manufacturer's own store for the same item, and when we have no affiliate link for a product we recommend, the page says so rather than steering you to something we do get paid for.

What our build refuses to publish

Several of the rules above are enforced automatically before anything reaches this site. The build fails if a price stamp goes stale, if the same product is quoted at two different prices on two of our pages, if a frequently asked question in our structured data does not appear in the visible text word for word, if a product card has no drawbacks, or if a page claims a publication date in the future. Rules that depend on someone remembering them are rules that decay.
